There is nothing like a hearty brogue to drop a listener into a faraway land, in this case Wales in olden times. She displays a mastery of family nuancesthe little rituals that can keep a family whole or tear it apart if those same gestures are ignored or forgotten. Nimmo’s story, set in the Welsh countryside, contains elements of SF and fantasy, but it’s firmly grounded in very real themes of blame and responsibility. And Gwyn, with the overeagerness of an apprentice, unleashes the darker side of his magic. A girl, in fact, arrives in the village, so similar in her ways to Bethan that her presence acts as a salve on the family’s wounds. If he is, he wants to use his powers to get Bethan back. Now he is 10, still blamed by his father for Bethan’s disappearance, and wonders if his grandmother’s hints that he is a magician could possibly be true. One night, Gwyn asked his sister Bethan to go up the mountain and rescue his ewe she was never seen again. Will he be able to use this special spider to bring his missing sister, Bethan, home? THE SNOW SPIDER spins an icy, sparkly web of mystical intrigue that sets the stage for the next two books in this outstanding trilogy! One blustery day, unsure what to do with his newfound magic, Gwyn throws the brooch to the wind and receives a silvery snow spider in return. She gives him five gifts to help him–a brooch, a piece of dried seaweed, a tin whistle, a scarf, and a broken toy horse. On Gwyn’s 9th birthday, his grandmother tells him he may be a magician, like his Welsh ancestors.

Stone sold her book as a proposal, resulting in her writing and researching simultaneously over an eight-week period to develop a draft. Stone was also inspired to write the book for her sons. Stone began writing the book after a series of racially-charge events, including the 2012 murder of Jordan Davis, a 17-year-old who was killed by a man who shot several rounds into a car of teenagers over a dispute about loud rap music, and the 2014 shooting of Michael Brown. The Hunt for Red October (1990) is still hard to be for either pure quality as far as espionage thrillers go in general, leave alone in the Clancy cinematic franchise, or just for bang-for-your-buck suspense, and frankly, your expectations would be fraught with disappointment even if you'd go in expecting another Tom Clancy movie to be in the same league. This is not surprising for a new author, but can be distracting nonetheless. So convenient.) The book has numerous plot holes. Whenever someone needs to feed, there just happens to be a pedophile nearby. I myself have never known one, but they seem to be ubiquitous and abundant in this book. (There must be a lot of pedophiles in this author's world. (The guardians even all look alike - black hair and brown eyes - how boring!) The author has the guardians and vampires only killing "bad" humans. The 'altruistic guardians' and 'evil vampires' are flimsy, predictable (and not in a good way) and completely unbelievable. Main premise of the world: vampires are all bad and give in to blood lust - the immortal guardians protect "innocent" humans from the vampires. Though this different interpretation quickly shows itself to be severely flawed. The world the author builds at first seems interesting and it is a different take on vampirism. But books are supposed to expand kids' horizons, so I don't see this as a problem but rather as a fun way to learn something new. The only challenge for some readers may be that the book deals with two key items, a typewriter and electric blankets, which many kids have never seen. But the book can also be used to start a discussion on everything from letter writing to labor relations! It's also a good story to use to teach sequencing-first this happenend, and then what? And then what? I brought in an old fashioned typewriter that looked a lot like the one in the book, and the kids enjoyed typing, just like the animals in the story. I bought this book after using it with special needs kids in my third grade class. Other writings include musical stage adaptations. The language and illustrations are simple but the humor is subtle. But the mechanics of fairy tales carried a message, too. The first two she purchased were a collection of Grimm's fairy tales and a picture book called The Lovely Garden, the story of the much-beloved Princess Yolande who lives on the Island of Can-be-done, whose "sweet smile seemed to say: 'What am I here for if it is not to make others happier?'" The book's message was reminiscent of her mother's inscriptions on the backs of her portraits-"To my Good and Precious Daughter"-directives on how to act and so meet the conditions of Edie's love. If Dare's first dolls were improvisational, homemade, the books Edie bought Dare when she was feeling flush were the real thing. There, she learned to find comfort and companionship in her books and her dolls, and to fire up her imagination. Mostly, when Edie had to be out in the world, Dare was left at home alone. |
